Tokyo: Nihonbashi
The Bank of Japan is in the Nihonbashi district of Tokyo. The old building, completed in 1896, is said to be one of the earliest European style buildings in Japan to be designed by a Japanese architect. It stands out from all the seventies-era buildings which surround it.
My office at IMES is in the less-picturesque annex.
The Nihonbashi area derives its name from a bridge (日本橋, literally "Japan Bridge") which was the start of the old route to Kyoto. The current bridge was built in 1911. Before the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, an expressway was built which covered the river and the bridge as well. decapitating parts of the decorations. (Although other parts appear to have achieved apotheosis.)
