The stairway to the second floor has an intricate trompe l'oeil ceiling 
On the left, the coat of arms of Portugal. On the right, the lion probably refers to St. Jerome.
On the way up the stairs is a glimpse of a hidden garden. 
The second floor gives access to the upper choir of the church.
