Hangzhou, Vernacular Architecture

Farmers Houses  Sorry that these pictures are not great--they were taken from a taxi on the expressway on a gray day. But I wanted to include them because I thought they showed some interesting architecture--I saw buildings like this from the train on the way between Shanghai and Hangzhou, and also on the outskirts of Hangzhou.  Our companions described them as "farmers' houses"--apparently farmers in this part of China have done well in recent years, and have put their profits into buildings. From our friends' tone it was clear that they regarded the style as inferior. But I thought the eclecticsm, houses mixing traditional motifs with western fantasy and topped with their ball-and-spike towers, was exuberant, colorful (again the pictures don't do justice), and comfortable.  Farmers Houses Farmers Houses   Farmers Houses
